About
There are people, events, works of art, etc. that open your eyes to a whole new world, as if a door was opened, and the light came in together with fresh air. In the lives of the two founders of Number Our Days - both members of the Budapest-based band The Grey Eminence - bands like Tourniquet, Believer, Living Sacrifice, Deliverance or The Crucified played the very same role: they opened the door to a whole new world in music. No wonder the two felt it appropriate to pay homage to the aforementioned forefathers; not by covering their songs, but by writing new ones, inspired by their work. The goal of starting Number Our Days was to build new walls-of-sound on the foundation already laid by others, at the same time painting those walls with colours of their own vision. "I remember how amazed I was and how excited I got the first time I heard Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance [the third album of Tourniquet] or Sanity Obscure [the second album of Believer], and the list could go on. Instinctual is a humble way to say 'thank you' and 'respect' to those great bands", says bassist/songwriter Gergely Kovács.
Instinctual is a 7 song, 30 minute long album the band has recently recorded at NoiseLab, with Dávid Fehér pushing the buttons. "Dávid was the obvious choice, we have worked with him a couple of times, recording materials of The Wheelers and The Grey Eminence, and we were very happy with the result", says drummer Tibor Barabás.
The two hired Péter Spányik to play lead guitar and do much of the lead vocals. "I used to be in a band with Peti, and knew what an amazing guitarist he was and how his voice would fit this type of music perfectly. We are very happy he said 'yes'", adds Kovács. Some of the lead and background vocals were done by Máté Karsay, a well-known phenomenon in the underground hard music scene in Hungary. "Máté is a very good guy, known him for some time, and really wanted to do something together with him for a long while. The time was now!"
The lyrics on Instinctual are dealing with how we people seem to love fighting against each other, hurting and destroying others and even ourselves. The record's title comes from a quote from the famous Austrian etymologist Konrad Lorenz, who said: "Human aggression is instinctual."
Though Number Our Days is just a side project for all of its members, they plan to continue working together: the band has already started working on new songs.
